Day 13 -- Travel from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Orlando, Florida

Tuesday 7/10/2001

We got up just after 3am to get ready for our journey south. By about 4:10am we pulled out of the campground. It was still dark outside. It was very damp. Even though the map program suggested a more southerly route using small roads, we decided to not push our luck and instead headed back out to I-95 near Florence, mainly using 501. It took us a bit over 1 1/2 hour to get back onto I-95. We went through many areas with dense fog before we got onto the Interstate. As usual, traffic before 8am is calm and you can cover a lot of distance without effort. We stopped at the first rest area in Georgia, just after 9am. We ate a little snack and stretched our legs.

The GPS and the lap top helped us navigate and get a feel for how far we'd come towards our goal. We got through the Orlando area before 2pm while the traffic was very light. Like the last time we went down here camping, it is a bit of a challenge to find the Fort Wilderness area. The Disney property is very large and covers several exits on I-4. We took the wrong one, of course, and had to drive on Disney property for some time until we actually got to the entrance for Fort Wilderness. Map of Fort WildernessBy about 3pm we were parked at our site. We were assigned site #1423. It was a bit tight to get in, but once parked it was very nice. Part of the problem is that the access road is narrow and many people have their trucks stick out on the road in front of their trailers and that leaves virtually no room to turn. My old 10ft (3m) sewer hose would not reach, but I needed a good excuse to replace it anyway. We got all our things setup and then headed down to the pool which is very close to where we're parked. I biked over to get some milk at the nearby lodge here at the campground: $2.95 for a half gallon of milk!!!

I was very tired so I went to bed at around 7pm without eating dinner. The others stayed up and went out for a bike ride and then ate dinner.
